Welcome to Elmfield
WELCOME FROM THE HEAD
Welcome to Elmfield School for Deaf Children. Let me take this opportunity to introduce myself to our community – I am Kate Persaud and I have the honour of being the Headteacher.
Elmfield School for Deaf Children is an incredible place. Our school is dedicated to promoting high achievement and learning for life. Our children and young people are immersed in a rich language community to thrive socially and in their learning. I am proud of our school's commitment to sign bilingual education. Pupils at our school develop confidence in both English and British Sign Language and all lessons are accessible whichever language is their preference. We value these languages equally. Every child at Elmfield School has the opportunity to study and use BSL. As well as supporting their language acquisition, BSL allows all deaf children and adults to communicate easily with each other and forms part of their Deaf identity.
Elmfield School has been growing rapidly over the past few years as more and more we are recognised as a Centre of Excellence. There are no other schools like us in this area, which is why we welcome students from at least 8 different local authorities into our school community.
In September 2023 we opened our beautiful new building at Sheridan Road. This was built to accommodate our Early years and Primary pupils. During the academic year 2025-2026, this site will also be where the majority of our Secondary students are taught. Our new Secondary school on Doncaster Road should be ready for September 2026. Both buildings will be stand out examples of thoughtfully designed bespoke Deaf Spaces.
We have so much to offer young deaf students and would love to show you around if you wish to book a visit.
