Elmfield School

Secondary

The secondary department offers a broad and balanced curriculum to all students.  We are co-located within the Fairfield High School building – but still very much our own school.  Pupils are assessed individually and can have a hybrid education with some lessons within the Elmfield School where they are taught by teachers who have the TOD (Teacher of the Deaf) qualification and others in Fairfield High School as appropriate to the student’s needs.  Lessons are supported by Teaching Assistants (TAs) who provide excellent individual support and Communication Support Workers (CSWs) who provide educational access to English or British Sign Language accordingly.

At Key Stage 3 students generally study English, Maths, Science, ICT, British Sign Language, Humanities (Geography, History and Religious Education) and PSHE (Physical social and Moral Education) with Teachers of the Deaf in Elmfield School. They have the option of studying  design technology, drama, dance, PE and music alongside their hearing peers in Fairfield, where they can take advantage of the specialist facilities and teachers.

At Key Stage 4 students usually study 8 or 9 GCSE or equivalent courses. Due to our unique approach to treating every chid individually when agreeing their pathway, we are able to support a more “tailor made” options package.

Core subjects: English, maths and science. Options choices may include: British Sign Language, history, geography, Life Skills through ASDAN, dance, computer science, photography, textiles, art, film studies, PE, music, engineering, food technology, health and social care, sociology, law and drama.
